the first time i ever saw danny ride was at sears point, i was just a kid. the crowd was going crazy, he was jumping so much higher than the other bikes. then it must have been around 79 in hangtown he pulled into the pits ramming the Maico factory van with fresh paint into the fence as he parked it. the race was mind blowing. there was a steep downhill with a jump and a turn at the bottom. all day long you could hear the bikes making the turns before the downhill. they would just blip the gas a little there. we stood at the snowfence about 5 people back just down from the jump. magoo got the holeshot and was leading the race by at least 7 bike legnths by the third turn. we waited to see what he would do on the jump. this is the moment i will never forget, the moment my motocross visons came true. we heard chandler’s bike pinned through those top turns. he hit the outside lip of the jump. whipped the bike so that we had to look behind us to see him. he whipped it back onto the track. he made the tight turn at the bottom. then he did it again the next lap. he think he won both motos that day in the 250 class. i still remember it all these years later. what a loss. what a man. the fastest mx rider who ever lived.

Danny was the rider, regardless of your brand allegiance, you watched intently and cheered for him as he hung it out every second.
The few times I got to see him here in the midwest were always the highlight.

Danny,I am so sorry it took almost a month to hear of your passing. I only knew you for about 5 years and we lost touch after my son stopped riding a couple years ago, but the lessons you taught us both went far beyond riding. It was an honor to have known you, and I will carry that which you taught me for the rest of my life. I dont use the “cant” anymore and I thank you for that. I will always remember our trips together up to Humbolt. I know you were always in pain and yet you were always fun to be around. You were kind, yet had the heart of a warrior. I remember saying goodbye once after a phone conversation with you, and you said ” I love you guys”. Well, we loved you too Danny. Our hearts our broken. Rest in peace my friend.
