It was a pleasure knowing you from way back in the day at Helvetia Park. You are not only a champ on the track but off the track as well. Your recent work teaching kids how to ride is a great thing. I will miss seeing you at Hangtown this year. Your memory will live in our hearts forever.
Thanks for all the memories. You may be gone but never forgotten. RIP Magoo.
This was written about MAGOO when he was 14. 4ft. 6in.&80lbs.Riding a 250cz He could not touch the ground. “If you enjoy motocross racing go see this boy ride, it is guaranteed you will enjoy the experience. If you should go to a race and not know who to look for and you see a bike in the distance that is really moving but looks like it has no rider, you can bet its MAGOO – SMOKIN AGAIN. Remember he was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall Of Fame. MAGOO said I know what I want I either get it or crash trying too hard. He always said if you do not crash sometimes you are not going fast enough. RIP MR. CHANDLER you will be MISSED!!!
As we all know Magoo was an animal on a bike, yet I will always be thankful for the message he shared off the track. Wonderful man. Tragic loss.
DANNY YOU WERE TAKEN FROM MOTOCROSS TO EARLY AND YOU WERE TAKEN FROM LIFE TO EARLY I GUESS THE LORD NEEDID YOU MORE THEN WE DID GOD BLESS YOUR FAMILY NOW IT IS TIME TO CELIBRATE YOUR LIFE AND ALL YOU HAVE DONE ON EARTH YOU WILL BE MISSED BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN.
Stunned. You probably were my biggest hero while growing up,Danny, you were a legend then and always will be.Sleep well!
You were Northern Calif best! It was a blast to watch Pat Richter and you go at it at Marysville MX tracks in the 70’s.
Heres to the wildest and fastest MX I have ever seen. Was a pleasure indeed …

When I heard about the departure of our loved Danny “Magoo” Chandler, I felt a big sadness. Life became so hard and cruel for Danny after his big injury at Paris Supercross that seem so unbelievable that, not enough satisfied, took him away at the age of 50 years old. Even here in Italy and europe, I’m sure that many old fans will miss a rider so great as Danny…I watched him in action only twice, in TV and during the 1985 Italian MX 500 GP when he was riding KTM, short time but enough for to fall in love about his style and riding mode, were always in my youthness dreams and are still well keep in my mind and heart…and never will be forgot. Rest in peace my great but unlucky hero.
Godspeed magoo…..
You will never be forgotten. Thanks for all the wonderful memories during my racing days.
I will never forget the first time I saw you line up at Sandhill on a CZ 400 with your dad
Holding the rear fender at the starting line because your feet wouldn’t reach the ground.
You won that race and I have been a fan ever since.
I hope the tracks are groomed in heaven.
If you looked up WFO in the motocross dictionary it would have a picture of Danny “Magoo” Chandler next to it and that’s it!
I raced with Magoo when I was young and remember many times at Marysville – either track – or many others when he would have to stand up on milk crate at that starting line and with the help of his dad – if I remember right – would shoot of the start finish line like a bat out of hell. It was like almost every Sunday, he would either lap the ENTIRE field of crash out. And that was bad since he wasn’t tall enough to get back up on the beast and get it running again!
After seeing how freakin’ awesome this kid was, I knew then that I was delegated to be a pit rider.
Gonna miss ya kid. You rode harder than anyone ever did.
“Godspeed” Danny as Joe M. put it! I’m sad but I’m glsd he has his legs again. Many Memories! Me and Castleman were just thinking the first time we saw Danny “Magoo” at Argyle Park in Dixon Ca. The year was 1977. I remember that morning well, we got the van stuck down by the river as we entered the park. Danny blew our minds and we saw him compete many a moto. Crash, finish or DNF, it was never a dull moment with his Magoo crazed riding style. We will certainly miss you Mr.Magoo!!…Love you
I’m stunned. I was just checking out some of my old heroes in the hall of fame and cried when I found out you had passed. Go WFO up there and well line up at Heavens Saddleback someday.
Danny wowed us at Watsonville and at the bigger races; never knew what to expect. He’d have spectacular crashes and always attracted attention. Luv’d it!!!
I liked getting real close to the track and snapping some shots.
(sent in a separate email to info@dannymagoo.com)
I was real sad to hear the news and about his struggles.
Ride On Magoo! We won’t forget ya.

When I was a kid back in the 70s and 80s I watched Magoo from a distance alway wanting to be mx star myself.I saw him at Oakland collisium Hangtown,Helvetia and Dixon as a Kid,I had magazine photos of him in my room.I heard the news last Friday at Speedway in Auburn and even though he never new me I feel like he was a friend. I wish his kids and close friends the best.
Danny, The first time I saw you ride was in Pittsburg Ks. To this day no one ever could ride a bike like you. We used to go fishing and camping together. I remember the time you borrowed my brothers 390 Husky and took off thru the golf course. That was hilarious!. Even on a rope swing over a strip pit you were insane! You always will be my Hero. We will miss you Danny. I will ride mammoth this year in your honor. Smaks
My favorite rider forever.Saw him pass Howerton & Glover at Gatorback,FL on the outside offcamber upshifting using the 500 class torque.Had to have been fourth gear, back end clawing for traction, both feet still on the pegs, front wheel in the air.Stay free brother.WFO.
Grazie d tutto Magoo!Tank you for all Magoo

Magoo was more than a legend, and more than a man.
I had the privlage of growing up in w.sacramento, a few doors down from his mechanic. our neighborhood waas full of young kids with motorcycles, and we all looked up at magoo, he would ride by the sacarmento river, Honda Hills, and as kids wed ride out and watch him taer it up.
then hed drive up to the local frosty, “whiteys” and you could meet him there, he was open and approachable, and when the orange Maico/fox van was in town there was a buzz.I remember him just a few doors down at my friends house, hanging out, all the kids would just ride till he got there than everyone stopped and watched.
Magoo would stop and tell us all to ride the track, so he could practice passing, he was definitly a great champion
j’étais un fan français de Magoo bon ride a toi
I will never forget youre style Magoo!
Rip,
Geert, Holland
WFO, man we’ll never see a cat just keep it pinned like you did! RIP bud.
Fondest memory: As a kid watching the GP from Carlsbad on ABC’s Wide World of Sports. Magoo got stung by a bee and swelled up like the elephant man. EPIC. The epitome of a real MX racer! Riders of today would have pulled off the track and run to their air conditioned semi and get treated by their personal physician!! One things for sure, Danny is riding right now.
Danny, you inspired many with your talents. I looked up to you when I was young and admire your efforts over the past few decades. The legend of Danny “Magoo” Chandler will live on. God bless.
Rest in Piece Danny You made a difference to so many of us and you will always be in our hearts and will alawys be remembered and sadly missed

Wow, I’m just stunned/broken hearted to hear of Danny’s passing. Just this past weekend I was able to meet up with a good friend of mine and we were discussing “Magoo”. He asked me where he was and what he was doing these days so I did a search and found the sad news. You’ll never be forgotten Danny, I’m sure he is hitting the doubles already! RIP.
Danny you will always be the Greatest Of All Time in my book. So many awesome memories. I lived behind the Billy Daprato’s parents house and remember you guys waiting for the Maico’s to ship over, and your Maico hauler. One time they shipped one out and we followed you to the Honda Hills where you could easily clear the 20 foot levee…amazing. Anyway, that was the first thing you did on the brand new bike while also breaking the frame in half…its funny now but Billy was really pissed. I only raced with you once at Argyle in Dixon, you were on that killer Black Indian from Woodland Cycle. I wanted one of those sooo bad. To many memories to list…Magill Cycle Park on the line with a milk crate smoking every while your seat had fallen off your CZ or Penton? Wadding 10 times and still easilly winning the race…wide open and full of talent. Rest in Peace Brother and thank you for being Magoo. (I want to send a copy of Maico Ad Ii have in my photo book so if anyone has an email that would be cool).
RIP Magoo …
One the most amazing things I ever saw was when a Japanese guy and his wife came up to me at an event Danny was involved in down in LA about 10 yrs ago. The guy wanted to know who the guy was who surrounded by all the people and I told him It was Danny Chandler. I thought the guy was going to have a heart attack, he paused for a second and then he said “oh Magooasaun”. He turned to his wife and spoke to her in Japanese “blah blah blah Magooasaun” and his wife got the biggest smile and said “oh Magooasaun”. Then they reached for the cameras, man I hate to type cast people but you had to be there.
After everything had calmed down and everybody got their pictures with Danny I walked over to Danny and I told him the story and he started cracking up, then I mentioned to him I thought that was an expression of the highest respect, he looked at me so calm and told me about some of his adventures in Japan and how the people over there just freaked out when they saw him ride. All I could think of to say to him was “I never knew an ASAUN before” and he just smiled. RIP MAGOOASAUN……….
I remember when Danny was a hard charging kid back in the 70’s when he would blow by me. Always liked you then and will always remember you. I think you were the only kid that crashed harder than me! Many people know you as “MAGOO” but I remember you as Danny. Your friends and family will truly miss you, but your body is now free. Go Danny you are now free to ride through the clouds above ………
Dear Hero Danny, Thanks for the times at Helvetia and the lesson on ‘no brakes’ – as it has been applied, when appropriate, throughout life. RIP Danny. The picture of you cutting that burm at Hangtown (Placerville), there you are – my hero riding, me at your right shoulder and my other hero, Tom, at your left shoulder. What a memory. My first memory of you is when I first met you at Helvetia…my bike broke down (that hodaka superrat – haha) and I was walking and you said “hop on”…”Oh Shit!!!! – I had no clue what a ride I was in for. Thank you Danny. RIP
And so now Magoo is gone… it feels like now one more window looking back to my youth is closed. Danny, I first remember reading about you in MXA and Dirt Bike. Then I saw you at Saddleback in “81 during your short stint on a YZ125. It was just incredible; me and a bunch of other teenagers were cheering you on each lap to jump higher & farther than that one before. Then I saw you on practice day at Saddleback when you just got contracted with Honda. You went into slick turns with both tires sliding like a roadracer, hunting for traction or the outside berm. Someone said at that moment that he heard that you had decided to ride more controlled. Talk about memorable. Then I saw you at Unadilla in ‘83 racing the 500 support class, flying off Gravity Cavity. Now you have new places to ride and God has restored your ability to ride them. Stay fast good man, and stay yourself. God Speed Magoo.
RIP Danny and wherever you are now I bet you got there WFO !!!!
My first memory of Danny “Mogoo” Chandler was way back in 1972-1973. I was just a learning to ride MX and had no idea who Danny was at the time.
There was this short kid that was using two milk crates as foot stands left on the starting line while the whole pack of 250cc class riders rocketed to the first turn at Carnegie park so many years ago. Danny left the starting line after the pack had cleared the first turn and won that race. Some feat for a 12-13 year old!
The next time I had the pleasure of watching Danny do his thing was at Helvetia park. I was witness to the most amazing rider I had ever to see at the time.
Danny came out of a corner and was headed directly for a very large Oak tree. As Danny disappeared from view(we all thought that was it for him) there was a sudden flash of a bike and rider flying across the track from one side to the other and then rocketing down the straight. What a sight!
Danny, We never became friends but it sure was fun knowing you.
God’s Speed
I just heard the news , and it is indeed , very sad. What is worse is the way the industry disposes of Magoo, Bailey, Fonseca, and others whos names we never know.It is heartwrenching to see these heroes reduced to handouts just to get by.I hope Magoo is at peace, and wish to thank him for the memories.
God Speed Magoo….Thank You for all the great memories and all that you have done…..Thanks for being you…
While, I am only a few years younger than Mr. Chandler, I recall really looking up to him in the early 80’s. Mr. Chandler’s acomplishments are those which most of us motorcyle guys only dream of & we miss him.
P.S.:
I heard he had just 1 daughter. Does anyone know how old she is & if she has good family support??
R.I.P. MAGOO. You are and always will be the GOAT. Thanks so much for all the memories. They date back from the mid to late 1970’s and early 1980’s, but I still see them as just yesterday. They have never left me and I’m sure I can say that for anyone that ever watched you ride. Do you remember helping me out with my C.T.I. Brace, back in 1984 at the Golden State at Sandhill Ranch. ? I still have it and still wear it till this day. You were in the process of getting released from American Honda, but still had the time to help me out, as you ran back and forth telling me not to leave. You were trying to get a CR500 for the Superbiker race. Thanks again for everything. My dictionary says,
MAGOO = MOTOCROSS AND MOTOCROSS = MAGOO. Good by my friend. Steve Chet Panovich
Danny, this weekend was all about you man. We missed you so much at Hangtown. I know you always understood how much you meant to me. Your positive influence on me has helpes me to become the guy I am today. I enjoyed the amazong adventure that we spent together. You were the one always there to tell me how proud you were of me, you were there living my dream with me every single day of my life. You rasied me to be strong, you taught me that pain is my friend, you taught me waht not to do, you pointed me in the direction that would evolve into the best possible outcome. I love you so much more than I ever showed. I will forever me proud to say what a best freind, Dad, and trainer that you were to me. Whip it flat goober, I love you.
Danny
I miss you so much how will it ever be the same …till I get to score you in a race , and then pay you off in the pro’s….save me a place at the finish..You are the face of Motocross
My condolences to all of Danny’s family and friends. I just happened to hear of Magoo’s passing while watching some FIM Motocross on TV today. One of the riders on the victory stand said “This ride was for Danny “Magoo” Chandler”. I was sad at the implication.
It doesn’t seem that many years ago when I was riding MX at Argyle Park, Sandhill, Plymouth etc. Watching Magoo during those days was a treat !! Talk about WFO !! What a blast.
Danny. rest in peace brother. So wonderful to hear and read about all of the positive and nice things you’ve done for folks all of these years. Sincerely, Tony Littman
