Goodbye ”MAGOO”
How I regret that you left …
How I regret that I met …
I will always admire him and I have in mind and in my heart …
Rest up there and make your own jumps ..
‘DAWG’ WILL HUNT’!! Danny.At.Wohlen.Gaildorf.’82. I recently heard that danny’s BALLS are so big, when he flew to heaven,The Man said, Dude,we’re going to have to Upgrade, wasn’t expecting that luggage ! AAAAAAAHH !! RIP. Fan for life… BRAAAAAAAAAP !
I really cherish the days I got to spend with Danny. His cards were always on the table, he did not hold any punches. He always told it like he saw it, whether it was a popular choice or not. He loved his fans and wanted them to know he was just like them, an average guy. Spent alot of time with Danny in Parsons & Pittsburgh Kansas where he visited frequently. We tore up the Crawford county strip pits on his Honda’s, one of the most memoreable riding moments I have ever had. Hung out with him after his “82″ win at the Carlsbad USGP, I asked him how the race was and he said he took 1st place, he did not say another word about it, didnt brag or boast at all. I didnt realize until years later the importance of that race to him personally and to his career. Its hard to be here without you Danny but, I know you’d want us to press on and push safety for you and wheelchair access and visibility at all racing events. We can all be asured now that God has his hands full with Danny up there runnin around!!!!! These are not my last words about Magoo.
Thank you mark, I.R.H.P dave
Just wanted to say what a nice guy Danny was. A friend and I went to visit(stalk) Danny when he was in Chicago in ’79. He sat and talked to us like we had known him for years. Great guy.
Thank you for your comments.

i cant believe people like travis mcgraith and the helmet painter guy oh ya troy lee with the millions they make off us could put up the cash and get a van for magoo instead of donating 5k LOL you guys should be ashamed of your whore selves especially you travis I thought you were a good boy but i guess hollywood stole your sole too too bad God bless magoo im sorry danny I am poor or I wou;d have bought you a new lease on life I spit on the motocross community
Danny I know your moved on, but for all your fans you were defintely the most exciting rider to watch, and what made you most adored by your fans is that you didn’t let go to your head. You loved riding motorcycles and that was it…You are missed the sport of motocross needs another Magoo, although there will never be another like yourself, it needs someone that will represent the sport in it’s purest sence like you did so well…This picture is of Magoo at Huron Ca during the Golden State Series, he is riding a 1981 YZ125, I remember this jump so well, he was flying farther than anyone that day and the bike sounded like an explosion went off when he landed…BTW, that day he was racing against, George Holland, Erik Kehoe, Ron Turner, Broc Glover, to name a few…sorry the picture isn’t very clear!!!
Thanks for the comments IRHP.INC Could you please send the image to IRHP@GMAIL.COM

Wow-How freak to find this out!My name is Ray walker-Known on the Web as Prostreetray.
I grew up in the Oangevale,CA-Still here. I am One year younger than Danny. I am so sadned to here of his passing.
As life has it I left this area in the early 80′s -and returned in the early 90′s-US Army.
Danny went to the High School unknown-Think it was Ponderosa H.S around Placerville.
We would ditch School and Hook-up with him in the Mid/Late70′s. We nicked named him the “The Cross-up Kid” LOL-We would get our Air cooled 2-shockers 2′ off the gound and Danny would jump our bikes that you just had to be there to believe.
Would do Mammouth Bar,Prarie City, back side of Sac Racway-And two spots long-gone
two large fields One was in Folsom-Dan Russells Property and the other was Man-Made or Honda Hills here in Orangevale.
I did not know Danny Chandler personaly, but i am proud to say that our bar’s touched-He was the Dale Earnhardt or Moto-cross. Wow- I will try and dig up some Pic’s-Thank you Cross-up Kid
Ray walker.
Thank you… International Riders Helping People.INC
I had just got my drivers licence and went to unadilla in 1982. It was the fall nationals for the 500 cc class.I can clearly remember Danny coming out of Gravity Cavity and flying so high off the jump he was well above the top of the flaggers tower! No one else even came close to the height he was going,he was a great showman and he alone was worth the price of admission.. .RIP Danny
Thank you IRHP.
Thank you.. IRHP
Rock on Danny I remember you at Unadilla around 82 or so WFO bouncing side to side off the track running your grassy lines for traction while the other guys were playing follow the leader and you hooking up and jumping stuff noone else would all the while people screaming for you! You were shoolin them! Live On Magoo, Im sure theres a good supply of fresh Knobbies and Throttle cables for you to stretch in Heaven bro.
It would have been nice to see him on his Honda back then I just got a visual image thanks for your comments… IRHP
I remember the first time I meet the Man known as Magoo when he was a kid at Triple M Speedway in Marysville, it was a night race. This was back in 1972 or 1973 he was racing a Yamaha 60. He was fast as lighting back then, motocross just started to catch on as the place to be for us trying to have fun racing motorcycles. I remember how fun it was to be around him and the other local racers of the day. Racing the expert class in Nor-Cal in the mid to late seventys was really wild, on any givin sunday there would be 40 to 50 racers in the 250 class, all the top racers would be there, so much fun. The thing that was the most fun was practicing at Bee’s Lake in west sac, the sand at the highway patrol training area overflow in west sac, many days at Mammoth bar riding up all the hills and on top of the flats. Danny was a guy anybody could go up to and he would talk with you about anything you wanted to talk about, very personal with a heart of gold. I really miss the overnight camping at races, drinking beer and dreaming about how the next days race would on fold.Really going to miss him and hope he is resting peacefully atop of the world. Much love to him and his family. Rest in peace my friend.
The expert claasses were fast in the 70s it was great to see. Factory pro’s would arive and the locals would try there best to get the money boy those were the days when racing was racing… Thanks for the repl IRHP
I was born in the 70′s however I have heard a great deal of stories from my father and uncle who rode motor cycles and raced in the 60′s and 70′s at places and Triple M speedway was one of them. I cant remember the exact year but in 2000 I went to the marysville raceway and watched my Uncle Frank Hall race the flat track on his TT500 at the age of 65 making a come and having fun doing it. With my whole family cheering him on. My father telling me about all the Great races he has seen there at Triple M… Wish I was there in those days..
***FRIENDS OF MAGOO****The Magoo Store Re-opens Soon!!!
Noah, who has been invaluable in his assistance with everything from The Danny Magoo Story, the website, and many other wonderful things. THANK-YOU NOAH. When The Magoo Store re-opens the funds will go to I.R.H.P. (International Riders Helping People). A California non-profit, founded by Danny Magoo, whose mission is to educate off-road rider saftey, awareness of proper riding equipment, and to foster the spirit and respect of off road sporting events. I.R.H.P. also advocates equal access for people with all disabilities, and would like to help prevent head and spinal injuries resulting from off-road riding. We will keep you posted on all our exciting changes right here on the Magoo page.
I recall Mammoth bar around 1975.Magoo and I had been riding most of the day, or technically I had been chasing Magoo ALL-OVER! At one point Magoo and I stop next to the American River. Magoo looks over me and declares “Gomez let’s cross the river”. My response was the obvious, “Magoo, this section of the river is at least 4′ deep and 80′ wide”. Magoo interrupts, “No, I mean haul ass and skip across the water”. As I am sitting on my CR 125 staring at the river all I can think is you’re crazy Magoo. Instead of stating this, my response is “You go first Magoo”. I will always cherish the expression on Magoo’s face half way across the American River as he is looking over his shoulder at me, and realizes that he is starting to sink. Next thing I see is Magoo and his KTM 125 heading downriver. Helmet and bike bobbing and rolling their way down the American River. AHH-That was a day! I miss my friend and brother.
When news first broke of Danny’s crash in Paris in 1985, my brother and I were devastated. Being young MX racer’s ourselves, he was one of our motocross heros and the constant talk of all of our friends. How could he possibly do the things he’d do? After that crash, the local MX promoters arranged a benefit race at the Famous Hangtown track just outside of town near where we lived in Sacramento. My friends and I raced in that race which was designed to raise funds for his medical expenses. I remember it being hot and the the track seemed impossibly huge and all I could think of was what quick work Danny made of that track every year at the Hangtown classic. I can’t remember how many laps we did but I felt very insignificant when it was over. I think I placed 14th overall at the end of the day, but it was one of the proudest finishes of my racing career. I haven’t thought about it in years, and I am just now learning of his passing as I looked up the dates of the next Hangtown race to take my young nephew. I am once again devastated by this news, but will never forget his contributions to the sport.
Rest in peace, Danny. You will be missed.
I remember it too Erick. First my friend Kevin, then Magoo, it was too much for the young me. I went out that day and rode all day in the pouring rain, crying, (that Magoo was hurt), laughing (that I wasn’t), feeling guilty, but mostly telling myself, Magoo wouldn’t be scared of some rain, and lightening. I ran out a tank and a half of gas in a thunderstorm that day. RIP Danny, the REAL Magoo.
rip danny u the only guy could pin wfo a 500 off the jumps even u alwys be in are memories glad i got to see u race and hang out couple time i think of u as i pass bye the house on the way to the spot goodspeed bro
I remember you during the superbowl of Genoa. You have been and will always remain the greatest motocross rider of all time.
Ciao Mr. Magoo.
I sure miss that ass with his name emblazed across his ass. Miss u smile, and miss the redhead advice u gave my son….
I took my son to see a motorcycle race at the Hangtown track in Placerville, California around ’78-’79. I was a street bike guy, not MX. From a long ago memory: They ran 3 major races, 125cc, 250cc and 500cc. In the 250cc race some guy named Danny Chandler was running, and took the lead early. He was starting to lap the pack by maybe the 3rd-4th lap
Coming uphill there was a hard right at top, then a dip and 3 berms to clear, tight right amd downwhill. Somehow something went wrong at first berm and Danny’s bike flipped at that first top righthander, on the upper left-hand corner of the track running clockwise. He was thrown completely off the bike, and did three complete cartwheels of his arms and legs out-stretched like an X, spinning in the air clockwise hands to feet to hands to feet to hands to feet and then layed there. A track official ran up and started to pull his bike off the track and Danny jumped up and swung on him, to LEAVE THE BIKE ALONE!
He pulled it up, jumped on, kicked it over. By this time the rest of the pack had lapped him twice. He let them pass and took off, lapped all of them 2 laps and WON THE RACE!! He came in 2nd in the 500cc race, I think because he was in a lot of pain by then, an hour later.
My son was hooked on dirtbikes for life, so was I. Danny was the GREATEST that EVER rode on this earth anywhere, anyhow and anytime! What an honor to see him ride. I’ll be seeing you up there, Magoo! God bless the family.
Thanks for the Jersey you gave me at the Washougal National when I was a kid. I wore it all the time proudly! and used to pretend I was you when I wore it practicing! and I still have it!
Godspeed Magoo!
god is great magoo
Hey Danny…
Still with you jumping a new double in the clouds!
We all keep on missing you…
Ciao!
I was fortunate to see Danny race alot, but one will always stand out in my mind, it was a supercross at the Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA. In the early 80′s, there was a hairpin turn that led into 3 gigantic hills, not a triple, just 3 huge mounds of dirt with sharp peaks 60′ to 80′ apart. Practice started and Johnny Omara was the first of very few who rolled the first hill then pinning it to double the next two. Then there was Danny”Magoo”Chandler who rail the outside of the hairpin turn taking out every track banner along the way and with about 15′ of muddy runway tried to clear apparently everything ? There was a huge gasp from everyone watching and the loudest panic rev I have ever heard, when Danny smashed down on the peak of the second jump without crashing I was amazed but what was even more amazing was Danny’s mechanic had to jump on the track to stop him from trying it again ! You will be missed by all Danny, Godspeed
A real racer. Sadly missed. Godspeed Danny.
It’s 1985 I’m in England UK at ‘Farleigh’ castle watching the World 500cc championship!
Our Hero Dave Thorpe ‘Thorpey’ battling with Andre Mallherbe for the overall title! I positioned myself at the top of a steep English mountainside to watch the gladiators do battle!!! Then I see what looks like a kid on a massive bike think it was a KTM but don’t quote me barrel into view! Arms flailing, throttle pinned back, bike bouncing underneath ” my breath is took from me” ‘Magoo’ chandler has introduced himself!!!! Now I loved ‘thorpey’ but I wanted to be ‘magoo’ his passion, abandonment to style fascinated me and inspired me more
than any other rider on the day! Jobe, Mallherbe, Thorpe,
Vromans you name them they where there!
Magoo you turned my head and made me feel alive!
You inspired and will continue to do so! I’m so chuffed I saw you in action, we use an expression in the UK when someone rides like Magoo “he’s a Nutter” well he was the biggest Nutter of them all!! Cheers Rich Cooke
They use to say his second car was an ambulance.
A whole Lotta truth to that.
See you my friend
on the other side
From Forest-hill, CA. Town hero.
Good friend, best rider I’ve ever ridden with. Racing wasn’t an option but riding was. The local Constable couldn’t even keep up in his fancy jeep patrol. Riding wheelies from one end of town to the other, with the cops on his ass, that could only be Danny. He hit a loading ramp during the chase jumped a parked car and was long gone. Some of the rides we were on, God had to be watching for him to make some of the jumps I saw him do… At that time he was on a 125cc. It was an extension of his body. He was as one with the bike. At one point on a ride my TT500 got the back tire hung up in matting on a step hill side. I couldn’t get it untangled, old Danny flew up to the top of the hill, left his bike came down helped untangle the mess. I was beat tired. Danny hopped on my bike pulled a wheelie and got my bike to the top of the hill like nothing. Amazing athlete, rider and friend.
Truly missed.

Germany Sept. 2010
Justin you said it best .Magoo ain’t resting now !! His tearing it up ..I still miss you so much.
RIP “Magoo” Living in Australia I never got to see you ride but I remember like yesterday my mates and I would be at the news stand each month the day MX action mag came out and we would look at the photos of Magoo with amazement and thinking at the time that a privateer was doing things that the pros couldn’t on a mx bike, gave us all motivation to go out and try harder you are missed in Australia by large numbers that you never knew but had a big impact on
Hope your jumping and ripping every day Troy
I spoke to Danny on the phone a few years ago when I got his number from this website. I was amazed I was actually talking to my HERO! I was so nervous I could barely talk. He treated me like an old friend and we talked about his races and anything else i wanted to talk about. He was so kind. When I told him I had to go he said “Don’t make this your last call..” I never did call him back. I wanted to tell him he was my hero but didn’t. I wish I would have because he was truly my hero. The man,the legend, the gentleman.Thank you Danny for treating me, a stranger, like an old time friend. You will be sorely missed by all. YOU ARE MY HERO! Rest in peace my friend…
Danny aint resting he’s Ripping! Godspeed Danny, show ‘em how it’s done!
I never saw Danny race in competition except in clips he would be watching when I came over to visit. But I used to ride far behind on the way to a practice track in Foresthill when we got there I could sit for hours on a hill top overlooking the track and watch him practice. He always amazed me at the speed he could accomplish,it was unreal!
I would come to Foresthill in the summers of the early 80′s after a long winter of loading lettuce in southern California I always looked forward to hanging out with Danny, Wrestling on his front lawn, swimming in the American river and dusting up the hill sides with our bikes. He was never to good to have fun.
Danny will always be remembered as a good friend.
Thank you for the memories…
Godspeed

the first time i ever saw danny ride was at sears point, i was just a kid. the crowd was going crazy, he was jumping so much higher than the other bikes. then it must have been around 79 in hangtown he pulled into the pits ramming the Maico factory van with fresh paint into the fence as he parked it. the race was mind blowing. there was a steep downhill with a jump and a turn at the bottom. all day long you could hear the bikes making the turns before the downhill. they would just blip the gas a little there. we stood at the snowfence about 5 people back just down from the jump. magoo got the holeshot and was leading the race by at least 7 bike legnths by the third turn. we waited to see what he would do on the jump. this is the moment i will never forget, the moment my motocross visons came true. we heard chandler’s bike pinned through those top turns. he hit the outside lip of the jump. whipped the bike so that we had to look behind us to see him. he whipped it back onto the track. he made the tight turn at the bottom. then he did it again the next lap. he think he won both motos that day in the 250 class. i still remember it all these years later. what a loss. what a man. the fastest mx rider who ever lived.
legends never die
God Speed Danny Magoo. You were one of this Canucks favorite riders. You were Motocross. Marc’o’

God speed to a fallen friend
Danny,I am so sorry it took almost a month to hear of your passing. I only knew you for about 5 years and we lost touch after my son stopped riding a couple years ago, but the lessons you taught us both went far beyond riding. It was an honor to have known you, and I will carry that which you taught me for the rest of my life. I dont use the “cant” anymore and I thank you for that. I will always remember our trips together up to Humbolt. I know you were always in pain and yet you were always fun to be around. You were kind, yet had the heart of a warrior. I remember saying goodbye once after a phone conversation with you, and you said ” I love you guys”. Well, we loved you too Danny. Our hearts our broken. Rest in peace my friend.
Danny,
I remember watching you at Hangtown and was amazed on how far you would jump down hill. You were simply amazing!
RIP
I was at Indian dunes late on a saturday. I was just a kid racin around on the International track. Thought i was the fastest guy on the track. There was a part on the track where you would climb up a hill turn right race along a 30 foot flat and then go down a drop off to the right. Anyways i was on the flat part when i heard the roar of a 500 coming up on me. I didnt know what side he was on,cuz he wasnt, he was above me! he flew up the hill must have seen me aproaching the top and just gassed it HE WAS IN MY LINE!!! He just jumped right over me clearing the flat and landing down the face of the drop off!. I remember to this day seeing “Magoo” on his leathers. I was like what a wildman! To this day after racing and riding my whole life, that was the coolest thing i have EVER seen on the track. The world was a better place with Danny in it. Hope to see him in the res.
